Walter H. Schrader, 87, of Hiawatha died Wednesday evening, January 28, 2004 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital where he had been a patient for the last couple of weeks. He was born March 22, 1916 the son of Henry and Sarah Walters Schrader on the family farm northeast of Hiawatha, KS. He attended Victory District #37 country school and helped his father in farming. After his father's death, he took over the farm and worked for his mother. He married Elizabeth Chaffee on February 28, 1937. She survives of the home. Walter farmed until 1958 when he became the Tank Wagon Agent for Continental Oil Co and later managed service stations in the Hiawatha and Fairview areas. He retired in 1980. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hiawatha, Baptist Men's Fellowship, and a Deacon of the Church, served on the Church Board for 3 terms, and served on the Pastoral Committee. He was a teacher of the Men's Loyal Sunday School Class, active in Midlands Ministries, a volunteer who led Prayer and Bible Studies at Oak Ridge and Maple Heights Nursing Homes, and served communion on a bi monthly basis. They moved to Hiawatha in 1961. Prior to his death he was a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home.
He is survived by his wife, four sons and their wives, three daughters and their husbands, 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stillborn daughter, Jean and a son; Stephen, three brothers; Paul, Leslie and Floyd and a sister, Ruth. Funeral Services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in Hiawatha. Pastor Vern Finley will officiate. Burial will follow at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha.
