The Brown County World, Friday Oct 26, 1917:
Chaffee--C. W. Chaffee died at his home, 502 Utah street, Friday evening at 9 o'clock. He had been in failing health for a year. Tuesday Mr. Chaffee walked up town and Wednesday celebrated his 72nd birthday. He knew that he was seriously ill and had expressed a wish that he might die on his birthday.
Mr. Chaffee was born Oct. 17, 1845, in Alvin, Ind. Here he grew to manhood and was married June 21, 1866, at Adrian, Mich., to Harriett M. Hopkins. In 1867 they came to Kansas and settled on a farm in Irving township. After living there 25 years they moved to a farm near Hamlin, where they lived until 15 years ago when they moved to Hiawatha.
Besides his wife Mr. Chaffee is survived by seven children, two having died in infancy. They are Mrs. Minnie E. Pierson, of Highland; Ora D. Chaffee, of Hamlin; Mrs. Nellie Weltmer, of Smith Center; Mrs. Annie Peiffer[sic], of Hamlin; Herbert Chaffee, of Whiting; Mrs. Della Sherrer, of Hamlin, and Wallace Chaffee, of Whiting. Mr. Chaffee was a good man. He was kind and helpful and was an especially good neighbor. He was unassuming and his first thought was always of his home and family. Since the children have grown to manhood and womanhood and have left the family home the companionship of Mr. and Mrs. Chaffee has been especially noticeable.
The funeral of C. W. Chaffee was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. A. D. Brokaw of the Christian church had charge of the services. A number of his old friends and neighbors came from Hamlin to pay their last respects to an old friend. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Shelton, Miss Katie Moody and S. L. Swartz, sang "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "Asleep In Jesus." The body bearers were grandsons of Mr. Chaffee and were Ivan, Dewey and Warren Chaffee, Gilbert Pfeiffer, Boyd Pierson and Luther Dunn. The body was taken to Hamlin for burial.
Mr. Chaffee had been a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge for over 25 years and had received his button for being a member [?life?] long. In recent years, however, he had dropped his membership.
