Dr. Margery J. Gilfillan, 94, of Sunny Shore Villas, St. Petersburg, Fla. died at 9:30 a.m. Monday at her home. Dr. Gilfillan was born in East Brook on Jan. 17, 1878 to the late Theodore Newton and Kate Wright Gilfillan.
She was a graduate of Westminster College in 1899, the Woman's Medical College in Philadelphia and received her MD degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago. She began her career as a physician in general practice in Canton, Ohio and later was on the medical staff of Kalamazoo State Hospital in Michigan. In World War I she served in the U.S. Medical Corps as a contract surgeon and received her discharge on March 28, 1919.
Following her military service, she became a general practitioner in Stamford, Conn., then served on the staff of Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan and retired after 30 years service. She has resided for the past six years in St. Petersburg.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. James Studebaker of Slippery Rock; a brother, Harry Gilfillan of Pharr, Texas and 16 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, James H., J.Clyde, Robert, David and the Rev. Calvin Gilfillan and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Smith and Miss Elna Gilfillan.
