Athearn, Robert C. — Civil War Pension Application, National Archives, Washington, DC: “I added the C in my name.” — Robert C. Athearn, 1913. There was no public record of his birth.
He made a copy of the information in the family bible at a family reunion at his sister’s home in Riley County, Kansas in 1907: Dear Sir In connection of proof of birth of Robert C. Athearn here enclosed will say that he brought to me a copy of part of the records from his father’s old family Bible, said copy was written with lead pencil and was not a verbatim copy of the original as it contained additional matter not in the old family Bible. It cited that there were ten children in his parents family five boys and five girls, then he gave the date of birth of the boys as follows: John S. born July 5th 1826, Mayhu C. Athearn, born January 18th 1835.
This brother was also a soldier, a Corp., in Co. D, 55th Ills Inf, killed as a sergeant, at Jonesboro, Georgia, Aug 31st, 1864, and is so recorded in Adjutant General Illinois Reports.
Then comes the date of birth of the claimant, Robert C. Athearn, was born Aug 2nd 1837.
Then comes J.T. Athearn, born May 3rd 1839. These boys were all soldiers in the civil war two of them the first two named gave their lives for their country.
In testimony thereof I subscribe my name and affix my seal as Notary Public of the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, this 24th day of May, 1913 — E. L. Wyatt Born 2 August 1837 in Fulton County, Illinois. His father was William Allen Athearn born 27 April 1792. His pension record named a brother, Josiah, and a sister, Susan Goff, of Quinlan (Woodward), Oklahoma. Married Mary A. Hess in Bushnell (McDonough), Illinois on 15 March 1866. Mary was born 6 July 1841.
Their children: Alice May born 14 January 1867; Elmer E. born 14 January 1869; William born 7 August 1871; Robert H. born 7 August 1873; Mary E. born 2 April 1878; Sallie O. born 23 May 1877 and unmarried in 1920; Guy L. born 23 January 1880.
