Troy Fowler Partain was born in rural Hardin County, Illinois in 1918 to Lula Robinson Partain and Harve Partain. He went to serve his country at the onset of WWII only to be killed near his base at the age of 24. He was not yet married nor had children. His mother was notified that he was involved in a vehicle accident and died a few days later due to his injuries. Due to wartime restrictions, he was buried in Alaska to his mother's heartbreak. She was sent photos of his gravesite years later which she wept over and held clutched in her hands many times. She never fully recovered from losing her only child. Since Troy's death, no one in his family has been able to travel to his burial site. When his mother passed away in 1983, a memorial headstone for Troy was placed next to her grave in the family cemtery (Rose Cemetery, Hickstown, Illinois). The empty plot remains to honor Troy and his family's hope that one day he may return home to be reunited with his mother. The local American Legion honors him by placing a flag there each memorial day.
