George W. Roland, a Veteran, Has 30 Grandchildren and 14 Great-Grandchildren.
George W. Roland, 412 South Sixteenth street, was born in Reading, May 21, 1838, and has resided here ever since. Mr. Roland is the son of Jacob and Rebecca (nee Hoffmaster) Roland, also born in Reading, is the eldest of seven children and the only surviving member of the family.
Mr. Roland's father was a soldier in the Civil war, serving from the beginning to its close. A brother, Jacob Roland, also served in the Civil War. A brother, Daniel, was a seaman in the United States service, who met his death during his seond term at Pensacola, Florida.
At an early age Mr. Roland learned hatting and was employed at J. G. Mohn & Brothers' Hat Factory for many years. He has livind retired for over 10 years. In 1863 the subject joined Company I, Twentieth Regiment, Pennsylvania militia, under Captain F. G. Boas, and was on guard duty stationed at Green Castle, where seven months were spent in encampment, when the company was ordered home. Between Carlisle and Harrisburg a serious collision occurred, when a cattle train collided with the company's train. Mr. Roland jumped from the door of the car and escaped without a scratch, while the captain and three members of the company were killed and over twenty wounded. Mr. Roland returned home, and followed hat finishing.
Mr. Roland was married in 1858 to Mary M. Steif, (deceased). Twelve children blessed the union, eight of whom survive as follows: George, Daniel, Wesley, Lynton, Rebecca, wife of Henry Kreisher; Nellie, wife of Howard Freeman; Hester, wife of Irvin Wade; Mary, wife of Harry Deeter, all of Reading. William H. Steif is a step-son, with whom he resides. There are thirty grand children and fourteen great-grandchildren. Mr. Roland has been a member of the First United Evangelical church for fifty-two years. Mr. Roland's health is somewhat impaired but he enjoys life to the full. Mr. Roland is a staunt Republican.
