Scooter The Cat
Birth: 1997
Death: 2011
Utah, USA

A close friend gone is not a close friend forgotten. Some friends stay forever in our hearts long after we can never see them again. Scooter the cat, who passed on recently, was just such a friend to all he met. For twelve years now, Scooter has greeted visitors at the Kitty Motel a building for special needs cats at the Sanctuary by rushing over as if each were a long-lost cousin, then flashing his enthusiastic smile as he approached. And oh, what a smile he had.

Until several years ago Scooter boasted the most impressive Dracula fangs you've ever seen on a cat. Considering those fangs, it's no wonder more than a few visitors widened their eyes when he rushed across the room to say hello with that toothy grin of his. What the visitors figured out soon enough, however, was that despite those tough-guy fangs of his he didn't have a wisp of a mean streak in him. That's not all they learned from Scooter, either.

To set the backdrop for those who didn't know him, Scooter didn't have any back legs. More often than not, visitors entering Kitty Motel for the first time would take one look at this two-legged cat sliding across the floor and their heart would break. "Oh how sad!" many would say.

And yet, Scooter was anything but sad. He was an extremely happy cat. So happy, in fact, that his joy for life rubbed off on others within minutes. All by himself, Scooter taught literally thousands upon thousands of people that special needs cats can live rewarding, fulfilling, happy lives.

Scooter came to Best Friends after living in a vet clinic. He had found his way to the clinic after sustaining the injuries that cost him his legs. And, sad to say, the clients who visited the vet office tended to find him "too upsetting" to look at. Eventually, he made his way to Best Friends.

At the Sanctuary, he might have still earned a few odd looks when folks first laid eyes on him, yet after that initial reaction he managed to connect with just about every single person he came in contact with. Truly, he taught by example that there is a power much stronger than the bad luck that left him handicapped: and that's the power of love. He was loved by many from afar, and even more so by those who knew and cared for him on a daily basis. Scooter gave all that love right back.

While his incontinence made sleepovers a challenge, Scooter was a pro at outings. One of the outings that volunteers were surprised he could go on were walks outside. In good weather, Scooter would sail out an open door in a flash if he had somebody willing to take him on an adventure. He didn't even need a leash or a harness, because volunteers could always keep up with him one way or another. In warm weather, Scooter spent many an hour cruising along outdoors, playing in the grass. "He had no problems getting around doing what he wanted to do, and entertaining everybody in the process," says one of his caretakers.

His recent passing was due to renal failure. Though he never found a home (his incontinence played a role in that equation), he had the next best thing living at the Sanctuary. At Best Friends, Scooter was surrounded every day by loving caregivers, quality medical care, all the excellent food he could eat, piles of toys, comfy beds, and countless new faces to greet.

When news of his imminent crossing spread, Scooter received an absolute outpouring of love as friends from all over came rushing to his side to bid a tearful goodbye. On his last day, he didn't spend a single minute without somebody right next to him, touching him, petting him, or simply talking to him. His passing leaves a large void indeed. And yet, for those who knew and loved him, he also left twelve years of irreplaceable memories.

Farewell, Scooter. Thanks for everything you've taught, shared, and given. You will be sorely missed
