Mr. Samuel Webster “Sam” Agee Sr., 92, of Highland Drive in Sparta, passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

He was born in Courtland on Oct. 21, 1914, the son of the late Noah W. Agee and Iowa Morrison Agee.

Mr. Agee attended Vanderbilt University where he was a member of the Commodore football team, playing fullback from 1936 to 1938. Josh Cody, veteran Commodore line coach called Sam Agee “the best fullback prospect in Vanderbilt history.” At the beginning of World War II, Sam left football to join the Air Force, serving as a staff sergeant and crew chief on a B-24. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He was the owner and operator of Agee Oil Co. in Sparta for many years.

He was a charter member of the Sparta Country Club, a member of the Sparta Rotary Club, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sparta and a 33 degree Mason.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary W. Agee; one son, Sam W. Agee Jr.; one son-in-law, Vance Paschal; three sisters, Eva Burden, Lola Mae Terry and Geneva Terry; and one brother, Paul Agee.

Funeral services will be Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Oak Lawn Funeral Home in Sparta with burial to follow in Oak Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Doug Benningfield, Don Johnson and Larry Burke will officiate the service.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Paschal of Readyville, Tenn.; one son, Robert W. Agee and wife, Kim, of Cookeville; eight grandchildren, Dale Hutchings and wife, Carrie, Web Hutchings and wife, Megan, Samuel W. Agee II and wife, Trisha, Kendall Agee, Ellee Agee, Andrew Agee, Robert Agee and Joseph Agee; two great-grandchildren, Danielle and Cole Hutchings; one sister-in-law, Sara Agee; and special caregivers, Dixie Russel and Janie Stroup.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the White County Public Library or to the White County Special Olympics.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements. 931-738-8549.
