On the evening of December 3, 1863, Edward Armstrong, age 20, of Stillwater MN and Jennie Kent, age 15, of Osceola WI both drowned in the St. Croix River at Osceola while ice skating hand in hand. Edward tried to save Jenny but failed, losing his life as well. Two men on the ice attempted to save the pair by laying boards on the thin ice to reach the hole they had fallen into. Edward's body was recovered with his hands tightly gripping Jenny's shawl. Jennie Kent was buried in Osceola's Mount Hope Cemetery. Edward was buried in the Old Willow River Cemetery in Hudson WI.
Edward is listed in the Old Willow River Cemetery Index but there is no grave marker for his burial location.

A young as he was, Edward was willing to volunteer as a soldier in the Civil War but he did not have his fathers permission to go. At the time of his death, Edward's father David Armstrong was working in Hudson, WI., as a cashier in the St. Croix Valley Bank.

Edwards grave marker no longer exists, but it stated his age as "20 years 3 months and 8 days"
