She was born in Tennessee to Harmon George Crouse and Mary Ann Murray Crouse. She met Zachariah Taylor Haynes after he had been released from Point Lookout, Maryland and given transportation to Nashville, TN. They were married in Rutherford County, TN on February 14, 1866. Most of their children were born in TN, except for Minerva Elizabeth, who was born in Arkansas after they moved there with her family to seek land for farming. They settled in Opposition, a town that no longer exists.
