Jonathan D. Barnard was born in 1846 in Chatham Co., GA, the son of Dr. Timothy Guerard Barnard and Mary Ann Mongin Barnard. His father, who died in 1849, was a prominent physician in Savannah. John was the great grandson of John Barnard a Revolutionary Soldier and the son of John Barnard ( 1719-1757 ) who immigrated to America in the 1730s.
John Barnard can be found in the 1850 census with his widowed mother and sisters in Chatham Co., GA. Then in 1860,shortly before the War broke out, the family was living in Marietta, Cobb County. John was only 14 years old.
On July 11, 1862 at age 16, young John Barnard enlisted into Co.H, 5th GA Calvary at Camp Williams. He last appears on the company's muster rolls for the period go June 30 to Dec 31, 1864, and he is listed as absent without leave on Nov 20, 1864. This was probably about when we died or was killed. He was 18 years old.
