His parents were married 6 Jan 1914 in Palm Beach, FL, and his father later moved the family to Deerfield, Broward, FL where he worked as a famer and there was the births of son Ken & his little sister Erma. Sometime after the birth of Erma, in 1918, the family packed up and moved up to Camden, NJ, arriving before 1920, where they then resided on Division St. Kenneth's father was working as a flagman for the railroad, while his mother was working as a portress. His maternal Grandmother Minnie Smith & Uncle Leonard Smith had also moved up to Camden and were residing on Silver Street along with Leonard's wife Amanda, son Richard & daughter Margarette. His Uncle Leonard had moved his family up from San Mateo to Camden sometime before June 1917, finding work with the Armstrong Cork Company, with Kenneth's family following them later.
Kenneth's father later left the family, moved back down to San Mateo & restarted his life down there, working as a cook for a family, remarrying & having another daughter, thus giving Kenneth a half-sister. Meanwhile, Kenneth, his mother Essie & his little sister Erma moved in with his Grandmother Minnie Smith who was now residing in a home she owned on Walnut Street. With them, residing as a roomer, was Arthur Tompkins, of whom soon would become Kenneth's step-father.
In 1930, Kenneth, age 14 & his sister Erma, age 12, were attending school while their grandmother worked as a domestic help for a family & their mother was working as a cook in a restaurant. Arthur Tompkins was working as a laborer for the city. The family did not have a radio in the home as of yet.
Before 1935, Kenneth's mother Essie & step-father Arthur, moved over into Philadelphia while Kenneth remained back over in Camden. By 1940 though, Kenneth had hopped across the river to reside with his mother & step-father, having gotten a job as a hotel elevator operator. His mother was doing housework for a family and his step-father was working as a pipe fitter in road construction. Together, the family was making a decent living, all earning decent wages.
But, before April 1942, Kenneth's family moved back over to Camden and got a home on Baring Street, where they then remained the rest of their lives.
Kenneth Norton Sr., has two namesakes after him, a Jr. and a III, along with several more grandchildren & gr-grandchildren for descendants.
