Born in Alabama and moving to Kentucky and West Virginia with his mother to work the coal mines, soon he found himself in church singing and enjoying it. He later quit the mines and formed the Swan Silvertones and they went on to record major hits and became one of the premier gospel groups to hit the airwaves. Al Green, Eddie Kendricks and many other artists gave credit to Claude Jeter for their success and for the style and professional flare he shared with the world of music. It is said that Simon and Garfunkel's hit "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was inspired by one of Rev. Jeter hit songs. In the mid 60's Jazz-Rocker Al Kooper introduced Paul Simon to The Swan Silvertones and Simon heard "Oh Mary Don't You Weep" and found a verse that gave him the inspiration for his hit song. The fact that Rev Jeter and his group never made the big bucks or did well finanically never stop the efforts or the well traveled performances. The name and the man will be remembered for the long-lasting impact he had on the gospel field and the music world in general.
