Leona Whinnery died on Nov. 28, 2008, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
She was born in Duluth, Minn., on May 4, 1914, the daughter of Miner and Ida Beals. Her family moved to Eau Claire when she was 6 months old, and she resided in Eau Claire for the rest of her life.
She was united in marriage to Douglas Whinnery on March 5, 1935, in Eau Claire. Leona was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was active in a variety of volunteer programs throughout the years.
Leona is survived by her daughter, Sally (Jim, Hunt) of Chula Vista, Calif.; her grandson, Paul (Sallie) of Oceanside; and her granddaughter, Susan (Andrew) of San Diego; her great-grandsons, Neil Hunt, Graham and Evan Williams; her sisters, Lois Waldock of St. Paul, Dorothy Easterson of Seattle and Hazel (Noelck) of Cleveland, Tenn.
Her husband, Douglas, preceded Leona in death in 1992. Leona also was preceded in death by her brother, Marvin Beals of Bemidji, Minn.; and her sisters, Margaret Wendt of Farmington, Minn., Laura Devlin of Portland, Ore., Jessie Johnson of Seattle and Gertrude Rude of Eau Claire.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Eau Claire with Pastor Gary Sahs officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be in the church one hour prior to services. Memorials can be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church or The Salvation Army.
