Robert enlisted for Civil War service as a private in Company H, 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, March 12, 1864, at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County), for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Gardener. The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Volume VII, p. 532 states that he was killed by a guerilla near Greenville, TN, April 24, 1864, and on p. 768 in the "Roll of Honor", that he was buried at Knoxville.
This was not the case for he returned home two years after the war had ended, according to a daughter's recollection.
He was very active in post-war veteran and family reunions of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Corporation, according to documentation and photographs in the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Memorial Foundation Museum, Sheffield Lake, Ohio. His pension file from the National Archives is a study in contradictions re what happend to him on and after April 24, 1864 when he was shown as killed. His penison file shows that he did receive a pension but it was revoked by the U.S Pension Bureau in 1894 with no reason given. It was never restored.

His name is on Panel #14 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. See www.soldiersandsailors.com.

His wife is buried with him.

His brother, Thomas Allen(Memorial #69858582) also served in Company H. Robert and Thomas enlisted on the same day.
