Robert emigrated to the United States from England in 1851. He appeared in the 1860 U.S. Census for Russia Twp., Lorain County, Ohio, living in the household of Henry C.Wilcox, 16, a farmer, his wife and family, working as a farm laborer. He enlisted in Company F, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at 27 years of age, for a 3-year term of service, August 6, 1862 at Brownhelm Township, Lorain County, Ohio. He was appointed corporal, January 1, 1863, but reduced to the ranks, October 1, 1863. He was mustered out with his company, at Raleigh, North Carolina, June 12, 1865.

The 1880 U.S. Census for Brownhelm Township, Lorain County, Ohio listed him at 44 year of age, farming, living with his wife, Hanna, 38, born in Pennsylvania and children: Lillie L., 14; Weston P., 12; Charles, 8; Sarah E., 6, Lewis H., 5 mos. Thomas applied for an invalid soldier's pension, April 18, 1878, which was issued as Certificate #148,143, no doubt, in Ohio. In the 1900 U.S. Census for Brownhelm Township, he was 65 Years old, working as a mail carrier, with only Hannah, now 59, whom he had married in 1859. Hannah died, in 1905, leaving him alone. He had retired by 1910. By 1920, at 84 years of age he was residing at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Home )now the Ohio Veterans' Home), in Perkins Township, near Sandusky, Ohio where he died February 29, 1920. He was returned to Brownhelm Township were he was buried with Hanna at Brownhelm Cemetery.
