Charles does not appear in the 1850 or 1860 U.S. Census listings. Records at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio in Lorain County, show that he was a student there in the preparatory department, 1860-1862, which was like present day high school. He either finished his course of study or left to enlisted at Oberlin, Ohio in Company F, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Captain Philip Hayes, an Oberlin College graduate, July 22, 1862 for a 3-year term of service.

He was appointed Sergeant from Corporal, February 9, 1863. On November 24, 1863, he sustained a gunshot wound in his left leg at the Battle of Armstrong's Hill, Nov. 23, 1863, south of Knoxville, Tennessee. Still hospitalized at the U.S. General Hospital at Cleveland, Ohio, July 30, 1864, he would be reduced to the ranks October 26, 1864 since he could not perform duty in the field. The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers shows that he was mustered out with Company F, June 12, 1865. On April 16, 1866, Charles applied for a soldier's invalid pension which was granted as Certificate #64788.

He apparently returned to Oberlin College where he studied beginning in 1867 through 1868. At that time he probably met his wife to be, Clara E. Berry, from Adrian, Michigan, who attended Oberlin College from 1866-1868, enrolled in the Ladies' Literary Course. They married October 4, 1871.

The couple relocated to Adrian, Michigan where the first of two children was born--James Berry Johnston, on August 20, 1872. Their daughter, Bessie E., was born in January of 1876. James had left the household by the time of the 1890 U.S. Census when Charles, Ella, and Bessie, now 24 and single were shown residing in Adrian with Charles working as a travelling salesman. Bessie eventually married Robert M. Thomson.

After Charles passed away in 1905, Ella applied for a soldier's widow's pension, March 30, 1905, which was granted as Certificate #647468 in Michigan. Although Ella's full name was Clara Ella Johnston, she went by the first name of Ella much of the time. She died in Adrian in 1918.
