Jerome appeared in the 1850 U.S. Census for Orange Twp., Cuyahoga County Ohio as 8 years old living in the houshold of his father, Ashel, 49,a farmer, born in Connecticut, his mother, Lavina, 43, born in New York, and two siblings, Olive, 11, and Alfred, 8, also born in Ohio. In the 1860 U.S. Census for Orange Twp., Jerome still resided in his parents' household, but only with one sibling, Alfred.

Jerome enlisted in Company A, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Aug. 4, 1862, for a 3-year term of enlistment during the Civil War. He received a $50.00 bounty(enlistment bonus) from Cuyahoga County plus a Federal bounty. He was mustered out with his company, June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina after the end of the war. His name is on Panel #13 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, OH. See www.soldiersandsailors.com for more info.

He returned home to live with his parents until his marriage to Odell S. Lackimer, October 19, 1870, in Cuyahoga County.

By 1880 they had relocated to Jackson Twp., Riley County, Kansas where he worked as a laborer. Odell, AKA Dell, was 28, and born in Ohio. Son Charlie was 6, born in Ohio. The family had returned to Huntsburg Twp., Geauga County Ohio, where Jerome applied for a soldier's invalid pension on March 1, 1889 which was issued as Certificate #448652. There Jerome appeared in the 1890 U.S. Veterans Census.

In 1900 Horace still resided in Huntsburg Twp. Charlie had left the household. A second son, Horace Grove Jerome, born September of 1882 in Ohio, was now 17 years old. Horace was still farming as shown in the 1910 U.S. Census but had again moved, this time to Hartsgrove Twp., in Ashtabula County Ohio. Odell died in 1917.

Jerome last appeared in the U.S. Census of 1920 for Painesville, Ohio in Lake County. He resided with his son, Horace G. Jerome, 37, a chiropractor, his wife, Mae, 33, and two daughters on North St. Flair Street. Jerome Sr. worked as a caretaker at a nursery. There he died of cardiac failure and broncho-pneumonia, January 25, 1922. His Ohio Death Certificate mistakenly shows that he was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Painesville. Instead he shares a small cemetery monument at Orange Hill Cemetery in Hunting Valley, Ohio in Cuyahoga County with his wife whose name and vitals appear as "Ordell L., Jerome 1851-1917."

Note: His brother, Alfred, was a veteran of service in the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
