William enlisted for Civil War service, August 21, 1862, in Company A, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County)for a term of 3 years. He resided on Pittsburgh St. in Cleveland. Dependents: Mother and Father. Occupation: Engineer. He was captured at Blue Springs, TN and paroled(date unknown). He was mustered out, June 30, 1865, at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH, by Order of the U.S. War Department.

His name is on Panel #13 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, OH. His name is spelled "Bear." See: www.soldiersandsailors.com.

His Grave Registration Card which was compiled as a WPA project during the Great Depression for veterans buried in Ohio is incorrect. He was confused with a totally different man with the same name erroneously shown as buried in Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.

He died at the U.S. Soldiers Home, Dayton, Ohio.
