Clifford F. Barnes, 85, of Belgrade, passed away March 28, 2001, in Billings. He was born October 3, 1915 in Kilgore, Idaho, to Franklin and Mett (Barney) Barnes.

As a boy he lived in Yakima, Wash., Driggs, Idaho, Chinook, Boulder and Townsend, Mont., before settling in Belgrade in 1932. He attended schools in Whitehall, Mont., Driggs, Idaho, and Boulder, Mont. He worked with his father on various farms.

Cliff married Bertha Schneiter for time and all eternity in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Feb. 4, 1934. The couple purchased their own farm in 1943 here in the Gallatin Valley.

He later drove truck for Mayflower Trucking Co. for several years. He then worked for Lumber Enterprise at Gallatin Gateway, until he retired in 1980.

Cliff was instrumental in starting the Barnes Steam and Power Show, with his knowledge of threshing machines and steam tractors.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and taking trips.

Cliff is survived by his wife Bertha; son Lance (Virginia) Barnes of Belgrade; granddaughter Lanciene (Jon) Ziegler; great grandchildren Kimberly and Matt Ziegler; all of Rapid City, S.D.; grandson Ward (Teri) Barnes; great grandson Justin Barnes; all of Belgrade; granddaughter Laurie (Wayne) Ford; great grandchildren Casey and Layne Ford; all of Livingston; daughter Shirley (Paul) Bragg of Olympia, Wash.; grandson Dennis (LaRea) Bragg; great grandchildren Anne and Jay; all of Sequim, Wash.; grandson Paul (Michelle) Bragg; great grandchildren, Ashley, Sara and Jenny; all of West Richland, Wash.; brother, Neil (Nella) of Kettle Falls, Wash.; sisters, Ruby (Ben) Arts of Belgrade, Rita (Paul) Lockridge of Bozeman, Vera (Ed) Peterson, Albert Lee of Minn., Betty (Darold) Jones of Colville, Wash.; and sister-in-law Ethel Barnes of Belgrade.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers; Grant (Leah) Barnes of Salt Lake City, Utah, D.E. Buzz Barnes of Belgrade; and infant son Clifford Jr.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Belgrade Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Interment to follow at Meadow View Cemetery.

Visitation Sunday from noon until 6:00 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel.
