He grew up in Lancaster County, where the scenic landscapes inspired a love of nature and its power.
In his early years, he enjoyed exploring caves and collecting fossils while learning about the land and its history.
He was a teacher in the Milford School District for 33 years. Throughout his 39 year teaching career, completed at Colonel Richardson High School, Mr. McKain touched the lives of countless students and fought to keep Earth Science as a vital part of the Delaware curriculum.
He was the recipient of many awards and recognitions, including the prestigious Christa McAuliffe fellowship, which he used to pioneer the use of the internet and technology in the classroom.
Mr. McKain was an active member of numerous state and national groups that promoted science education and was a past president of that Eastern Section of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
Later in life, he enjoyed researching his ancestry, and was considered by those in the field to be among the best amateur researchers around.
In the true teaching tradition, he was always willing to share his knowledge and skills with others.
