April 9 1864 in a War torn area of Chariton County Missouri 6 Parks children became orphaned and 2 were basically on their own. The names of the 6 children are William M., John, Sarah Elizabeth, Lee Jones, Noah Flood, and Columbus Aquillas Parks.
This is their story. This is John Parks.
From "Great Uncle Roy" "It is said Will, may have had a brother named John and it is believe he moved to California." This information is from a descendant of Will Parks family. The uncle gave her a picture and said it was Will's brother. Written on the back is Chas. McMillan Studio, Vallejo, Cal. John Parks was the second son of Lemuel and Dicey Winn Parks born March 9 1852 in Keytesvile Twp. Chariton County, Missouri. His mother Dicey passes away shortly after, March 17, 1852. (Please see "Bible Records" inserted in pictures)
In the 1860 census John is with his father, but William is not. "The children in the 1860 census were a combination of his, hers and ours. Four of those children were Parks. Three of the children were Lem and Amelia's, (from Lem's second marriage) "Sarah Elizabeth, Lee Jones and Noah Flood." The fourth Parks child was John.
I received guardianship records on a John Parks from Chariton County Missouri, front page dated Apr 16, 1866. Because he remained in the home with his father he probably became a ward of the court after Amelia died April 9 1864. "Will" going to "Uncle Jed?" in 1852 became ward of the court then, thus never finding guardianship papers due to the destruction of the records prior to 1861.
The guardianship papers made no mention of who John's parents were. John was suppose to go to the home of John Plunkett. I have been unable to find him in the 1870 Chariton County Census in the home of his guardian. I can find John Plunkett, but no mention of John Parks. Although Mr. John Plunkett was appearing in court for the care of John Parks about the age of 13 years and continued too. The last record in John's Probate Court record is dated Feb 5 1867. This would make John around 15 and my suspicion is he was on his own. His guardianship records are missing the Bond of Guardian and Curator. However there is a paper from the Court ordering John Plunkett to appear and produce this Bond.
I have never been able to locate him or pinpoint any one, John Parks, to pursue him further. I have never been able to find him in any census, except for the 1860, he was part of the "his", in his, hers and ours. You ask how do I know this is the John I am looking for? I have gone over the Parks genealogy of Chariton county, MO with a fine tooth comb. I can account for almost every Parks in Chariton County Missouri from first record of 1819 through the missing years till present time.
Story has it John Parks & Sarah DeHaven went to Texas. William got lonely and followed them. Wm. stayed in Texas. Sarah came back to Missouri, and John went on too California.
From Mid Continent Library in Independence, MO a lady from Montana looking for information on "John Parks born about 1850 in MO married Lucy Jane Barnes in 1880." I wrote her a letter. She had moved and forwarding address had expired.
The letter was returned to me. Smack! I just hit another brick wall...
