Came to the United States as a young boy and was employed at Alan Wood's Delaware Iron Works at Wooddale near Wilmington. When the company built the Schuylkill Iron Works in Conshohocken, he came to the area. On August 24, 1861, he was one of 34 Conshohocken area residents who mustered into Company C of the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteers.He trained at Robinson Meadows in Wissahickon area of Philadelphia before leaving for the front on October 5, 1861. He served in the regiment until he was discharged on August 25, 1864. He suffered an ankle wound at the Battle of Second Bull Run. The wound healed but broke out 40 years later and never healed again. Mr. Colen served as a Trustee to the Conshohocken Methodist Church. He served as Post Commander of George Smith Post 79, GAR and was a member of the 88th PA Surviviors Asso. He was married to Harriet Jones. In June of 1916, he was involved in an automobile accident which caused serious injury including a fractured right cheek bone and the loss of his right eye. His injuries eventually lead to his demise. At the time of his death he was survived by 3 daughters; Bessie Walters, Emma Haley and Eva Koch.
