Chappell, a carpenter, enlisted as 4th Corporal of Co. "I", 1st Regiment of Virginia Infantry, in Richmond on 21 April 1861. He was 21 years old.
Chappell was reduced to the ranks on 28 April 1862, and was AWOL from July 1862 to July 1863. After bring confined upon his return to the unit, he returned to service in the field and was killed on the Howlett Line on the Bermuda Hundred peninsula.
