Robert joined the Marine Corps in June 1940. He fought in the defense of Wake Island, was wounded, and then was captured. Robert was one of a small number who earned the Wake Island Medal. He also received the American Defense Medal, the Asiac Pacific Medal, and a special citation from President Roosevelt. His body was returned to the United States and buried in April 1948.
