George Matthews, 77, of Lee Park Towers, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday morning in Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

He was born in Kingston, a son of the late Joseph and Catherine Clark Matthews. Mr. Matthews was employed for 33 years by various coal mining companies, but primarily for the Woodward Colliery, Kingston. He later was employed for 20 years by St. Vincent de Paul Church, Plymouth. He resided in Wilkes-Barre the last 17 years.

His wife, the former Sara Jennings, died in 1972.

Surviving are a son, Richard, Larksville, daughters, Catherine Jones, Harveys Lake; Georgetta Nelson Potoski, Plymouth; Rosemary Gary, Mountaintop: several grandchildren and great- grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Nitsche, Chicago, Ill.

Funeral will be held Monday at 9 from the John J. Kielty Funeral Home, Plymouth. Interment will be in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Larksville.
