Margie (Sinnott) Bates was born on Tuesday, November 4, 1902, in Georgetown, IA, the daughter of William and Mary (Daugherty) Sinnott.

On Tuesday, September 18, 1928, Margie married Maurice Bates in Georgetown. She and Maurice knew each other from childhood.

Margie grew up in Georgetown, and she graduated from Georgetown HS. She had planned to go to Rosary College in a Chicago, IL, suburb, but cancelled that plan and stayed at home to help raise siblings when her father died in 1918.

Margie later attended Iowa Normal Teaching College in Albia, IA. After earning her teaching certificate, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse outside Georgetown.

From 1921 until her marriage, Margie lived in Chicago with a brother and his wife and worked at J. P. Stevens, an upscale women's clothing store.

Margie and Maurice lived in Des Moines for 37 years, where they belonged to St. Augustin's Catholic Church. Their last home was 3201 Lincoln Place Drive. After the death of Maurice in 1973, Margie remained in Des Moines, living in a condo on Grand Avenue; enjoying her friends; playing bridge; taking up golf; and, when weather permitted, walking to St Augustin's for daily Mass. She did not miss a day of Mass in 27 years. In December 1980 she had glaucoma and cataract surgery, after which she returned with daughter Mary to Denver, staying there until May of 1981. Because her eye problems continued to worsen, she moved to a nursing home in Dallas, TX, in late 1981; moved to Denver, CO, in May 1985; and moved back to Dallas in 1989 -- always living near either son Joe or Mary.

Margie's hobbies included cooking, gardening, reading, golf, bridge, and socializing with a host of good friends.

Margie and Maurice had 1 son and 1 daughter: Joe and Mary.

Margie, 90 years old, died on Monday, October 18, 1993, at Doctors Hospital in Dallas. The cause of her death probably was Parkinson's disease. A wake was held at Georgetown St. Patrick's Catholic Church on October 20. Following a 10:00 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church on October 21, 1993, said by Father S. A. Conrad, she was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Georgetown, next to Maurice. Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, IA, was in charge of arrangements.
