A memorial service for Mabel R. Miner, 97, or Mentor, Ohio for the past 26 years, was held Wednesday in the chapel of Mentor United Methodist Church, Mentor, Ohio.

Born May 20, 1902 in Necedah, Wis., she died Sunday, June 6, 1999, at Heartland of Mentor. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, in New Lisbon Cemetery, New Lisbon, Wis.

Mrs. Miner graduated from New Lisbon High School in 1919 and LaCrosse State University, LaCrosse, Wis., in 1923. She began her 40-year teaching career in one-room country schools in North Dakota, Minnesota and Illinois, before retiring from the Des Plaines Public School System in 1961. Mrs. Miner was a former member and deaconess in the Des Plaines Congregational Church and was also a member of the Mentor United Methodist Church and the Dorcas Circle. She was active in the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) in Illinois, serving as secretary, program-membership chairperson and president of the Lake County Chapter in Ohio. She was also a charter member of the Illinois and Ohio Retired Teachers Association and served many years on the Legislative Task Force of the Senior Citizens Council on Aging in Painesville, Ohio.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Bee Fowler Hummer of Mentor; grandchildren, Dr. Steven (Kristy) Hummer of Painsville, Jody Hummer of Santa Monica, Calif., and Laurie (Burton) Hummer Loomis of Mentor, great-grandchildren, Erin and Sarah Hummer of Mentor; Jake Snell of Mentor and Rachel Loomis of Mentor; and 31 nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She is also survived by her stepdaughters, Marian Miner Cook of Indian Wells, Calif., and Pearl (Paul) Kraft of Poway, Calif., five stepgrandchildren; several great-stepgrandchildren; former daughter-in-law, Kate Hummer of Mentor, and former son-in-law, Dan Snell of Mentor.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, J.M. Fowler, C.P. Maine and A.S. Miner; parents, R.P. and Benia Robertson; sisters, Esther Stromstad and Dorothy Larsen; brothers James and Leroy Robertson; and son-in-law, Dr. R.J. Hummer. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Food Bank of Lake County, 35008 Apollo Parkway, Willoughby, Ohio 44094; to the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc., 371 E. Main St. (Jericho Turnpike), Smithtown, NY 11787-9897; or to the Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., PO Box 5200, New York, NY 10163-5191.
