Roland G. "Ronny" Aamold died Tuesday evening, Nov. 14, 2006, at his residence, surrounded by his family, following a 10-year battle with emphysema.
Ronny was born on Sept. 27, 1927, in Stanford, the son of Carl and Ruby (Bennett) Aamold. Ronny attended school in Stanford. After graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. After being discharged in San Diego, he moved home to Stanford to work on several area ranches.
He met his first wife, Faye Tonack, upon returning to Stanford. They were blessed with three children. Ronny and Faye later divorced, but remained cherished friends throughout the years.
Ronny later became employed as an operating engineer for Judith Basin County. It was while working for the county that he met a young waitress, in the By Way Café, named Dolly. He married Vivian "Dolly" Schmidt on Aug. 14, 1959. They remained lifelong companions, for more than 47 years, until his death.
While traveling to Ennis in 1963, Ronny stopped in Butte and applied with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. One week later, he and Dolly were living in Butte and Ronny was working at the Berkeley Pit. Ronny was employed by the ACM until the closing of the Berkeley Pit operation in 1983. He went on to further his education and earned his boiler's license, after which he went to work for the Butte school district, where he was affectionately known by the children as "Poppy." Ronny was a wonderful provider that always made sure that there was a good roof over the family's head and food on the table. He enjoyed working around the house, fishing and hunting, and traveling and camping with Dolly and his family. Ronny's family was always the greatest joy in his life.
Ronny was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stanley Aamold, Albert and Viona Aamold, and Raymond and Ann Aamold, Ralph and Marcella Aamold; sister, Edith Webb; father-in-law, Jack Schmidt; and brother-in-law, Earl Schmidt.
In addition to his wife, Dolly, he is survived by his children, Steve Aamold, Gayle Hokanson, and her life partner Garry Spitzer, Rhonda Mosteller, and Don Preston and his wife Bonita; his grandchildren, Heidi and Aimee Hokanson; twin brothers, Lance Ek and his wife Natasha, and Aaron Ek; and his great-grandchildren, Logan, Tristan, and Aiden Ek.
