After graduation he studied for the priesthood at Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, St. Mary's Seminary in Norwood, Ohio, and St. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Michigan. He was ordained a priest in Detroit on October 27, 1945 by Cardinal Edward Mooney. In 1961, he was appointed pastor of St. Aloysious Parish in downtown Detroit, and in 1965, he was appointed pastor of the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, also in Detroit. On May 1, 1968, he was consecrated an Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit by Cardinal John Dearden, in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral where he continued to serve as rector until June 15, 1977. As Auxiliary Bishop, he had a long and distinguished career that included a variety of assignments, serving over 100 parishes, and confirming two generations of confirmation candidates. His special concerns included human rights issues and the pastoral care of his brother priests. On July 1, 1995, he retired from active duty when he received senior priest status. He was a resident of the Senior Clergy Village in Livonia, and he continued to help out at parishes on the weekends until his death. In October 1995, he and two fellow priests, Cardinal James Hickey (1920-2004), and Reverend Theodore LaMarre (1920- ) of Saginaw, MI, celebrated their 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood together at a special dinner in Saginaw, Michigan. Cardinal Hickey grew up in Midland, MI and was the archbishop of the archdiocese of Washington, D.C. for 20 years.
