Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1946 to 1956), he played at the left field position with the Cleveland Indians and Brooklyn Dodgers. Born Loren Dale Mitchell, he attended Cloud Chief High School in Oklahoma, where he excelled at baseball, basketball and track. He continued his athletics on the collegiate level at the University of Oklahoma and established himself as a supreme, disciplined hitter for the school's baseball squad. Following his service with the United States Army Air Force, with who he was station in Europe during World War II, he was signed by the Cleveland Indians as an amateur free agent in 1946. He made his Major League debut with Cleveland as a late season call up on September 15, 1946 and yielded a hefty .432 batting average in eleven games-played that year. He secured the starting left field position in 1947 and remained at that capacity for the next seven-seasons (1947 to 1954). He experienced a world championship with the 1948 Cleveland Indians. In 1949, Mitchell led his league with 203 hits, which included his league-leading 23 triples. By the time, Cleveland captured the 1954 American League Pennant, he had slipped to the role of reserve player. He was acquired by the Dodgers during the 1956 season and played with Brooklyn in the 1956 World Series, before retiring. In 1,127 career regular season games, he compiled 1,244 hits, with a .312 lifetime batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked in the oil and cement industries. In 1981, the field in which the University of Oklahoma plays their baseball games was named Dale Mitchell Field in his honor. Mitchell suffered a fatal heart attack in early 1987. He as posthumously inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. (bio by: C.S.)
