Mary, her husband and daughter came to the states in the 1880's.
She was unable to speak, read or write English when she arrived in the states, which was not unusual for the immigrants in those years.

Mary was also a well known midwife, and delivered many, many babies, one of which was her own granddaughter Mary Havelka.
