He was the son of James Dickinson III and Ruth Hartshorn. He married Hannah Skinner on 5 November 1772 in Somers, Connecticut. He had military service during the French and Indian War under Israel Putnam and he later served as a captain in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He was a farmer and they removed to Greigsville, New York about 1820.
