Daughter of Edwin Bryant Crocker and Margaret Eleanor Crocker. Died at the age of 22 years, 4 months, 11 days, of Bright's disease.

Sacramento Daily Union, Volume 8, Number 350, 29 December 1879: "Death of a Sacramento Lady. — Dispatches received in this city yesterday announced the death Saturday evening, at the residence in New York of her sister, Mrs. M. H. Walker, of Miss Nellie Crocker, daughter of Mrs. E. B. Crocker of this city. Deceased was very highly esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who will sincerely mourn her untimely taking away. She had had been ill but about two weeks."

Sacramento Daily Union, Volume 10, Number 137, 29 January 1880: "A LEGACY.-The Call, of San Francisco, in referring to the recent engagement of Wm. A. Beck and the late Miss Nellie Crocker, of this city, says: "A romantic story is in circulation regarding the disposition of the estate of a young Sacramento heiress, who died last month in New York. The lady who is well known in this city, being related to one of the railroad magnates, her father having been also one of originators of the Central Pacific, was engaged to be married to the son of an ex-Secretary of State, now in this city. A few days before she died, in New York, the young lady made her will, disposing of $600,000, which was in her own right. Remembering her comparatively poor friend in this State, she inserted a clause in the will giving the young man $100,000 in gold coin as a parting gift."

Correspondence exchanged between Nellie and her beau, William A. Beck (Deputy of Secretary of State), reveals a more personal view of the Crocker family than any other surviving source. The letters, invitations and telegrams, written in 1879, refer to family visits to Lake Tahoe, dinner parties at the Crocker home, and Nellie's trip East to visit her half-sister Mary in New York City, her sister Jennie in Elmira, and family friends in Baltimore. Nellie, who never enjoyed robust health, died suddenly on December 27, 1879 in New York.
