William Oren Crumby Sr. of 37 South Century, Memphis fireman for 17 years, died at 4:15 a.m. November 9, while on vacation in Hot Springs, AR. He was 54.
Services were at National Funeral Home and burial was in Memorial Park.
Born in Marietta, MS, Mr. Crumby moved to Memphis when he was 5. He served on the USS Roosevelt at Pearl Harbor and in the Pacific during World War II. He remained in the Navy until 1952, attaining the rank of chief petty officer.
Four years ago Mr. Crumby moved to Florence, AL where he was veteran service officer for the Government. He returned to Memphis in April and was employed by the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served as elder of the Florence Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Crumby left his wife, Mrs. Kathryn Moore Crumby; two sons, Robert Crumby, a minister in Louisville, KY, and W.O. Crumby Jr., a Lieutenant in the Memphis Police Department; a daughter, Mrs. Jack Whitaker of 964 Sandra Road; two brothers, E.M. Crumby of 1211 Woodbury and L.R. Crumby of Earle, AR; two sisters, Mrs. B.E. Holder of 3457 Bowen and ??
