DEER LODGE — A.E. "Rusty" Landers died Thursday evening at his home.
He was born March 5, 1924, in Rome, Ga, to Bruce and Lucy Landers. He was the fifth of 12 children. Upon completing his schooling, he joined the CCCs, where he worked throughout the southeast. He then persuaded his father to sign allowing him to join the Navy while only 17.

Bill proudly served aboard the USS South Carolina for the duration of World War II. He was involved with the major offenses of the South Pacific, the bombing of Hiroshima and the signing of the peace treaty in the Sea of Japan. He received numerous awards, including two Silver Stars and four Bronze Stars.

While on leave, he met the love of his life, Doris Smith, and on Nov. 4, 1945, they were married in Bainville. Their union brought forth two daughters, Linda and Nancy.

Rusty and Doris moved to Three Forks, where he owned and operated a shoe shop and worked at the Trident Cement Plant. Soon he traded both jobs for a career as an electrician with the Milwaukee Railroad. The family moved to Missoula and then in 1961 to Deer Lodge, where he was general foreman of substations until the railroad closed.

He loved Montana and its rich history. He was proud to say he and his horse had travelled all through the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. He was a life member of Elks No. 1737.

Preceding him in death are his wife, who died in 2003; parents; brothers, Omar, Vernon, Robert, Guy and Edward; and sisters, Ruby, Margaret and Lillian.

Survivors include daughters, Linda (Ron) Tewalt, Sidney, and Nancy (Charlie) Sedminik, Deer Lodge; grandchildren, Adrienne (Terrell) Cotterell, Shelby, Jennifer Tewalt, Norway, Charles (Jessie) Tewalt, currently serving in Iraq; brother, Bruce (Shela) Landers, Cartersville, Ga.; sisters, Alice (Don) Noble, Delta Junction, Alaska, and Nina Owen, Jacksonville, Fla.

Funeral services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery with the Powell Country Combined Honor Guard providing colors. A luncheon will follow at the church fellowship hall.

Memorials: First Presbyterian Church, Powell County Senior Citizens' Center or charity of donor's choice.
