Another deed shows James purchasing land at Smith's Neck in 1689. Another deed dated 10 Aug 1696 transferred 20 acres at Smiths Neck from Thomas Briggs to John Akin and his brother James. It is not known if James accompanied John to Smiths Neck. The 1689 deed notes him living in Portsmouth. A deed fragment which is believed to be from around 1712, states that James was a vintner (a wine merchant) in Newport at that time. Another deed dated January 27, 1725 notes that James was a "miller".
