Doherty's have lived in La Canada for over 75 years. Frank P. Doherty met his wife Sarah at USC Law School. They graduated number one and number two in their class.
Soon, they settled in La Canada to raise their family -- one daughter who became a nun and six sons. Two of those sons died in World War Two. They were John Edmund Doherty and Joseph Connor Doherty.
The brothers were close in age. John was born in Los Angeles on February 7, 1919. Joe was born less than a year later on February 2, 1920. Both brothers attended Loyola High School and then received their bachelor's degrees from Santa Clara University.
John Edmund Doherty was the first to go to war. He served as a Captain with the United States Army assigned to the 41st Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division in Europe. He was killed in action in Italy on December 10, 1943. He was 23 years old.
Joseph Connor Doherty followed his brother to the the same unit. He was a 1st Lt. with the 41st Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He was killed in action in France on March 15, 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star with the Oak Leaf cluster and the Purple Heart.
