Mary H. Hartley Mahan, youngest child of fourteen children of J.B. and Sarah Hartley, was born near Annawan, Illinois on June 8, 1863, and had reached the age of 81 years, six months and twenty-two days at the time of her death here, Saturday, December 30, 1944. She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
Her husband, Horace Greeley Mahan died in Eureka December 20, 1942.
She came to Kansas in 1878 at the age of sixteen years with Mr. and Mrs. O. Colburn to join her parents and family who had moved here earlier from Illinois.
On April 14, 1880 she was married to Mr. Horance Greeley Mahan in Eureka, Kansas. They began housekeeping in the house now owned by their son, Roy Mahan, They were the parents of five children; Mrs. W.W. Hall of Eureka, Kansas; Mrs. R.F. Slane of St. Louis, Missouri; Roy H. Mahan of Wichita, Kansas; Dorothy H. Mahan of St. Louis, Missouri; and Robert Greeley Mahan who died in 1910 at the age of five years. Beside her children she leaves seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Mahan was a devoted wife and mother, the welfare of her family being her first concern. She was a good neighbor and many deeds of kindness were the result of her unselfish interest in those about her.
Funeral service was held from the Baird Funeral Home Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Bert Sutton. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
