He is the son of Samuel Gilmore and Sarah Johnson Gilmore. He was born in Fairplains, according to records held at the Montcalm County clerk's office. However, his daughter's death certificate says he was born in Greenville.

He married Eva May Jewell on Oct. 25, 1890, in Charlotte, Michigan. He married second, Kate Belle Downer, on March 28, 1914.

He is buried near Kate and her second husband, Stewart Shutes. While their graves are marked with a single stone, William Gilmore's grave is not marked.
