Dudley Moorhead, SJS Dean, Dies
Dr Dudley T Moorhead, 59, Dean of Humanities and Arts at San Jose State University died Friday in a San Jose Hospital after an extended illness.
He was dean at the university since 1957 and had planned to retire on July 12 because of ill health.
A native of San Jose, he attended St Leo's Hester and Roosevelt schools and was a 1930 graduate of San Jose High School. He received a B A in 1934 from San Jose State Teachers College, an M A in 1938 and a PhD in history in 1942, both fron Stanford University.
Dr Moorhead began his teaching career at San Jose State University in 1946 and became a full professor in 1952. That year he became chairman of the first Faculty Council, forerunner of the Academic Council.
He became head of the newly formed Department of History, Economics and Geography in 1954 and became dean of the division of Humanities and Arts in 1957.
In the summer of 1965 Dr Moorhead was the chief of party for the California State College team that visited and studied in Pakistan. He had also been active in World Affairs Council, the Commonwealth Club and Phi Alpha Theta. the history honor society.
Last May the Academic Council at San Jose State University passed a resolution that Centenniel Hall be renamed Dudley T Moorhead Hall in his honor.
His wife, Lucille, has been a teacher in Santa Clara Unified School District since 1951. His son, Dudley T Moorhead II, a medical doctor is clinical director of the Public Health Service of the Southe western Region of Alaska at Bethel.
Dean Moorhead was an Army veteran of World War II. He resided at 1565 Willow Oaks Drive.
He also leaves his mother, Mrs. T. J. Moorhead, and a sister, Jean Moorhead, both of San Jose; and one grand daughter, Katherine Anne Moorhead, of Bethel Alaska
Rosary services will be 8 PM Tuesday at Lima- Salmon- Erickons's Memorial Cathedral Chapel. Last rites will be at 10 a.m Wednesday at the chapel followed by a High Mass of the Resurrection at 10 AM at St Christopher's Church. Entombment will be in Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Contributions to the Dudley T Moorhead Memorial Scholarship fund at San Jose State University in care of Donald Ryan are preferred.
