"Less than 300 yards from here, on April 5, 1942, ten Army Air Corps aviators perished in the service of their country.

They crashed their B-17E "Flying Fortress," Serial 41-2443, returning from a routine combat patrol mission around Hawaii searching for enemy forces. They crashed in foul weather and darkness on a bleak Easter Sunday evening that claimed two patrolling combat crews within 10 miles of each other.

This plaque placed by the Hawaii Aviation Preservation Society
on the 65th Anniversary of the crash.
You are not forgotten…"

On the night of April 6, 1942 at about 0700 GCT, a B-17E No. 41-2443 cracked up. Conducting investigation and search. To date have found 4 bodies, but impossible to establish identification. Will send additional details later. Listed below are members of crew: 1st Lt. Ward Cox, Jr, 0392806 and Charles O. Allan, Jr. 0367225, 2nd Lieutenant James W. Roshoe 0430910, Staff Sergeants Luther L. Perry, Jr. 6292999, Mathias E. Donart 6568848, and Edward L. Hakes 6667164, Sergeants Warren F. Schneider 12025843 and Wilbur L. Gravitt 6296816, Corporals John F. Morris 6999571 and John E. Muckey 6981906.

KILLED EASTER SUNDAY
Liberal, [Kansas] -- [Staff] Sgt Luther Perry Jr, formerly of this locality, was killed in action, while serving with a bombing squadron "somewhere in the Pacific", the family has been advised. He was killed on Easter Sunday. He was a cousin of Carl Perry, Mrs Amos Bartels and Mrs J H Grider, of Guymon [Oklahoma].
