Officials Probe Fatal Accident
Police continue to investigate an accident that claimed another life Monday, a spokesman said.
Thomas Verlon Benedict, 17, of Edmond died of massive head injuries at about 10 a.m. Monday at Mercy Hospital after the accident Sunday. The car's other passenger, Kurt Kueteman, 19, of 420 N. Baumann, Edmond, died at the scene. The two Edmond residents were riding in a car that crashed into a telephone pole after going into a median on Broadway Avenue, overturning and skidding on its top and side. The car was driven by John Paul (Shane) Bartholomew, 18, of 1221 Mockingbird Lane. Bartholomew is in critical condition at Mercy with head and internal injuries. Officer Greg Eischeid, Edmond police spokesman, said police are investigating Bartholomew's role in the accident. Police reconstructed the accident scene Monday.
An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper said he clocked the car traveling at over than 100 mph before the wreck.
Note: By the time, the OHP trooper turned around, all he could see was sparks and dirt flying. At the time, Broadway was being widened north of the Edmond city limit. The car, a red '70 Chevy Nova coupe without seat belts, went off the road where Broadway curved to the right going north into Edmond. Kurt was ejected and died instantly. Shane was also ejected and suffered multiple injuries. The car was pancaked, some citizens had to peel the roof back in order to remove Tommy from the car. Officer Rusty Fees determined Shane was driving 138 mph when the accident occurred about 1:25am Sunday morning. Shane died from his injuries on Feb 3, 1986.
The Kueteman family held no hard feelings toward Shane and attended his funeral in addition to Tommy's funeral. It was a senseless accident that affected all the families and the Edmond community for many years.
