Birth: Sep. 23, 1846
Clarke County
Virginia, USA
Death: Feb. 9, 1909
Virginia, USA

John is the son of William Carroll Alexander (18101850) and Susan Catherine Swartz (18261885). His mother remarried after his father death to John Emmett Scruggs on 01 August 1854 in Fauquier County, Virginia.

John enlisted in the Confederate States Army and was mustered in Company A, Mosby's Virginia Cavalry formerly known as the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry. He was paroled on 22 April 1865 in Winchester, Virginia and described as follows: age 18, height 5 feet & 4 inches, light complexion, brown hair, and hazel eyes.

On 30 July 1864, John was shot in the side of the head. Lucky for him, he was only grazed from Yankee bullets who were shooting down upon Mosby's men from a high bank along the Potomac. John was taken back across the river to the Virginia side where his wound was dressed by Dr. Sowers at a nearby farmhouse. He boarded at the home of Hugh Water's mother, south of Upperville.

John earned his law degree from University of Virginia after the war, and practiced law in Leesburg, Virginia as a partner in the firm of Alexander and Hughes.

He married Emma Hughes on 1 October 1874 in Hamilton, Loudoun County, Virginia [FHL Film #32374, Reference ID book 2, page 95]. From this union they had the following known children: John (18751876), Ada Lee (18781946), Elizabeth Morgan (18801965), John Richard Henry (18821966), Violet Duncan (18841975) and Emma Herndon (18861955).

(link to father and following obituary by Cindy Crigler) Winchester [VA] Evening Star, 10 Feb 1909

"Intelligence was received here today of the death at his home in Leesburg yesterday of John H. Alexander, a prominent lawyer and ex-Confederate soldier, who expired after a lingering illness at 8 o'clock.

"Mr Alexander, who was a native of Clarke county, was a brother of the late William R. Alexander, the noted criminal lawyer of Winchester. He was very well known here among members of the legal profession and others, and had made his home here before removing to Leesburg. He was 62 years of age.

"Mr Alexander was also known as an author, having recently issued a very interesting work, 'Mosby's Men' and was a member of the supreme judicial tribunal of the order of Knights of Pythias. He served throughout the war in Mosby's command and was one of the youngest and most daring members of that famous company.

"He is survived by his wife, who was a Miss Hughes of Loudoun county; by four daughters, Mrs Elise Lewis and Mrs Buell of Conway SC; Misses Violet and Ada Alexander of Leesburg; and one son J.R.H. Alexander, an attorney of Leesburg.

"The funeral services will be held at Leesburg and the burial will be made at that place."
