Ruby M. Ferguson, age 95 of Nashua, died Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call 3-6 Sunday at Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ruby Mildred Ferguson was born May 17, 1914, in Nashua, Iowa the daughter of Simon Lee and Mary (Schultz) Hammond. She received her education in Nashua and was a 1931 graduate of the Nashua High School. Ruby received her teaching certificate from the former Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received a B.A. Degree from Wartburg College.

In May of 1945, she married Perry Ferguson. He died in April of 1946. She taught in rural schools for 12 years, a year in Plainfield, IA, and was an elementary teacher in Nashua for 24 ½ years. She spent 19 winters in Texas, where she was a member of the Rockport Art Association, the Rockport Womens Club where she served as secretary for the Iowa Delegation. She became a resident of Bartels Lutheran home in 1996. Ruby also held many offices in the teachers association, was a long time member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Isabella Club and a charter member of Jr. Federated She was an active member of the United Methodist Church and Circle.

In her free time, Ruby enjoyed doing oil painting, traveling, collecting antiques and gardening.

Survivors include one daughter, Jean Heady-Spahr of Naples, FL; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; one brother, Gale Hammond and a sister, Ethel Fritcher; a son-in-law, Robert Spahr.
