Mr. James L. "Nine Fingers" Kirby

James Leonard Kirby, 72, of Litchfield, died Sun. Aug. 5, 2007 at 4:40 p.m. in Hillsboro Area Hospital in Hillsboro, IL. He was born Oct. 12, 1934 in Shipman, IL, a son of Harold L. & Elizabeth (Giffin) Kirby. He was the Lake Superintendent in Litchfield for 23 years and the Street Superintendent for the City of Litchfield for 15 years. He retired in April 2005. Prior to working for the city, Jim worked for the IL. Dept. of Soil Conservation. He had also served on the Litchfield City Council as a Jr. 3rd Ward Alderman. He belonged to Circle of Friends Rendevous. The Nine Fingers campsite at Lake Lou Yaeger in Litchfield was named in his honor. He was an avid sports fan. In his spare time, he enjoyed his motorcycle and doing yard work. What Jim loved most was his family. He married Lavonna Darlene Compton on Aug. 9, 1958 in Litchfield. She survives.

He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Michael & Kevin W. Kirby & 2 brothers, Harold E. & Donald Kirby.
Funeral services will be held Wed. Aug. 8, 2007 at 11 a.m. in Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Brother Ed Diveley, pastor of Southside Church in Litchfield, & Pastor Mike Bates, also of Litchfield, will officiate. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery in Litchfield. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. in Plummer Funeral Home.
