Son of John Ransom Orvis and Chaney Maranda "Christina" Sweet.
James married Elvira E Hendrickson Aug. 16, 1891 at West Union, Custer County, Nebraska. They had two daughers, Clara Rosella (born June 30, 1891 at West Union, Custer County, Nebraska) and Georgia V. Orvis (born Dec. 21, 1895 at Sargent, Custer County, Nebraska). Elvira died Dec. 9, 1898 at Sargent, Custer County, Nebraska.
James married Sarah J Carpenter (2nd wife) July 15, 1900 at Taylor, Loup County, Nebraska. They had one daughter, Viola Belle (born Feb. 12, 1901 at Sargent, Custer County, Nebraska). Sarah died March 18, 1905 at Sargent, Custer County, Nebraska.
James married Anna (Sturdevant) Freeman (3rd wife) July 1922 at Taylor, Loup County, Nebraska. They didn't have any children together. Anna had a daughter, Wave Valine Freeman, from her 1st marriage to Charles Freeman.
James Obituary TAKEN FROM THE CUSTER COUNTY CHIEF APRIL 25, 1940
JAMES A. ORVIS PASSED AWAY AT THE HOME OF HIS DAUGHTER, MRS. EDGAR MASON, IN SARGENT ON MONDAY, APRIL 15. HE HAD BEEN IN VERY POOR HEALTH FOR NEARLY A YEAR.
FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD IN THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, APRIL 17, WITH REV. V. R. BELL IN CHARGE. HYMNS WERE SUNG BY A QUARTET COMPOSED OF MRS. BERT AMOS, MRS. FRED RUSH, IVAN SHIRES, AND G. E. LIVERMORE, WITH MRS. R. G. BROWN AS ACCOMPANIST.
PALLBEARERS WERE: ELLWYN BRASS, LOUIS BITTER, ELTON ORVIS, WALTER HOLLEY, CARL METCALF, AND JOHN CLAY. INTERMENT WAS MADE IN THE WEST UNION CEMETERY.
JAMES A. ORVIS, SON OF JOHN AND CHANEY ORVIS, WAS BORN AT WEST UNION, ILLINOIS, MARCH 7, 1873. WHEN FIVE YEARS OF AGE, HE CAME TO NEBRASKA WITH HIS PARENTS. THE FAMILY HOMESTEADED NEAR WEST UNION, JUST WEST OF SARGENT. 62 YEARS OF HIS LIFE WERE SPENT IN NEBRASKA AND CUSTER COUNTY. HE WAS ENGAGED IN THE CARPENTER TRADE AND FARMING.
HE WAS MARRIED THREE TIMES, EACH WIFE HAVING PRECEDED HIM IN DEATH. HE WAS FIRST MARRIED TO ALVIRA HENDRICKSON, AND THEY WERE THE PARENTS OF TWO DAUGHTERS, BUT THE MOTHER PASSED AWAY WHEN THEY WERE QUITE SMALL. HE THEN MARRIED SARAH CARPENTER, AND THEY WERE THE PARENTS OF ONE DAUGHTER. SOME TIME FOLLOWING HER DEATH, HE WAS MARRIED TO MRS. ANNA FREEMAN, WHO PASSED AWAY IN 1938.
THOSE LEFT TO MOURN HIS DEPARTURE ARE THREE DAUGHTERS, MRS. EDGAR MASON OF SARGENT, MRS. ERNEST BENEDICT OF WATSON, MISSOURI, MRS. VIOLA SCHMIDT OF LODGE POLE, NEBRASKA AND A STEP-DAUGHTER, MRS. WAVELINE PRICE OF GRAND ISLAND, EIGHTEEN GRANDCHILDREN AND EIGHT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. ALSO, TWO BPOTHERS, GEORGE V. AND BERT R, ORVIS OF SARGENT, BESIDES MANY OTHER RELATIVES AND FRIENDS
