Death: Mar. 29, 1933

Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Roetman were called to Estherville last Wednesday afternoon by the sad news that her father had been shot at 3:30 that afternoon, passing away an hour and fifteen minutes after the accident. The following account is taken from the Estherville Daily News of March 30:

Lloyd E. Elkin, 62, farmer living six miles southwest of Estherville, was killed yesterday when the gun he and his son, Howard, 19, were repairing, accidentally discharged, the bullet lodging in his head.

He died at 4:45 p.m. on the X-ray table at the Coleman hospital.

The Elkins, father and two sons, Rolland and Howard, had used the gun, a .22 calibre single shot rifle, for hunting last week. They noticed then that the sights seemed out of line.

As a precaution before beginning to repair it yesterday, they pointed the gun out of the workshop door and pulled the trigger two or three times. The cartridge failed to explode and they believed the gun was empty.

While Howard held the gun, his father filed the sights. When they finished, Mr. Elkin put the rifle to his shoulder and sighted along the barrel, passing it to his son. As he turned to lay the gun on the bench, the hammer struck the edge and the cartridge exploded, striking Mr. Elkin at the base of the skull, just behind his left ear.

Born in Champaign county, Illinois, Mr. Elkin has lived in Estherville township eight years.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Saturday at the Christian church, Rev. A. L. Ragsdale of Eldora officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.

Surviving Mr. Elkin are his widow and three sons, Harry, Rolland, and Howard at home, a son, Marshall, of near Dolliver, and two daughters, Mrs. Emily Roetman of Lake Park, and Mrs. Elva Opelt fo Estherville.
