J.M. Pike, One of Oldest Residents of Etowah County Died Last Night. Passed Away at the Home of His Son, Sheriff B.M. Pike After An Illness of Several Weeks...Came to Alabama 73 Years ago and Settled in Cherokee County.

After an illness extending over a period of several weeks, J.M. Pike, father of Sheriff B.M. Pike, passed away at the home of the latter yesterday evening. The deceased was one of the oldest residents of this section of the state, having come to Alabama when only 13 years of age, from Greenville, S.C. He was 63 years and 6 months old at the time of his death. Death was due to his advanced age and a complication of ailments.

When the deceased came to Albama with his parents the country was new and wild. The family settled in Cherokee county and Mr Pike attended school there while the Indians roamed the mountains and valleys. In 1861 he moved to Etowah county and this has been his home ever since.

When the war broke out between the states, Mr. Pike was true to Alabama and enlisted in Wheeler's cavalry. He was a brave soldier and served through the war. When the war was over he returned to his home and the remaining years of his life were spent in developing the country and rearing his family.

The funeral will be held at New Bethel church, Hokes Bluff, at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning.
