David R. Ames Sr., 72, of Richmond, died peacefully at home on August 4, 2009 after a bout with Lou Gehrig's disease.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Edwards Ames; sons, David R. Ames Jr., Erick Edward Ames and their wives, Wendy and Betty; grandchildren, David R. Ames III, Jackson T. Ames, Jens E. Ames and Kirby O. Ames; and a sister, Mary Close.
David was born in Portsmouth, Va., and maintained many friendships there. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. After David graduated from the University of Richmond, where he is in the Richmond Sports Hall of Fame, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers and made the team before being drafted into the U.S. Army. After service, he played football for the New York Titans and the Denver Broncos. When David returned to Richmond, he had a long career in management at Philip Morris. David loved maintaining his home and lawn, fishing and collecting juke boxes. Most of all, he loved helping people.
The family will receive visitors Friday, August 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bliley's Funeral Home, 8510 Staples Mill Road.
The funeral will be held at the University of Richmond Cannon Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 8, followed by a burial at Hollywood Cemetery.
